Remember Brigham Young University? No? Me, either.
According to Wikipedia, Brigham Young (or BYU as it is known for short) is a for-profit university jointly owned by the Church of Scientology and the Kremlin that currently plays intercollegiate sports in the Big Sky. Anyway, *apparently* this team was a conference rival of ours in the Mountain West until 2011, when it was defeated and mocked so thoroughly by Kawhi Leonard that it withdrew from the league out of cowardice and spite and cowardice.
This doesn’t sound familiar at all tbh, but apparently there is footage of the event in question.
Well, that certainly does look humiliating!
Why does any of this matter now? Because apparently our two schools are about to become reacquainted in the sport of football!
What fun!
The Aztecs will play the … uh … (toggles back to Wikipedia page) the Cougars in San Diego on November 30, 2019 and then again in Provo (NOTE: check spelling) on November 14, 2020. As trusty blogger vocalminoritysdsu pointed out on Twitter, it is possible that Aztecs-BYU could be the last ever sporting event played at Qualcomm Stadium before the new MLS Stadium is projected to open. Or the game could be played at Petco Park if the Q is already blowed up by then. Who the fuck even knows right now? Like, are we certain that any of us will be alive come 2019?
We are certainly not.
At any rate, I am excited to learn more about these “BYU Cougars” in the months and years leading up to this contest. I certainly hope they do not have an arrogant, sanctimonious fan base. Furthermore, I would be dismayed to learn that their football players like to punch opponents in the nuts after the whistle. I bet they definitely would NOT staff a replay booth with a partisan, as even the mere mention of such a thing in print would rightfully get a person hit with a lawsuit.
Of course, if any of these things turn out to be the case, that will certainly dampen my enthusiasm for the upcoming home-and-home series. For now, though, all of us in Aztec Nation have nothing but rave reviews for this new development!
RAVE. REVIEWS. FOLKS.
