Remember a few weeks ago when Fresno State’s men’s basketball coach got poached by UTEP and we all laughed and laughed? Seriously … UTEP! The one in El Paso!
Well it’s not so funny anymore, is it?*
Congrats?
Yeah, congrats.
This is a good hire for Fresno State — one that interestingly now has the head coaches of SDSU’s top two rivals coming from the Steve Fisher coaching tree.
Justin Hutson was the recruiting and defensive guru on both of SDSU’s Sweet 16 teams, and the fact that he had to wait this long for his first head job (phrasing) is kind of a travesty. With Hutson on the staff the Aztecs allowed fewer than 60 points per game in four different seasons.
Hutson also left Fisher’s staff for two years for a promotion on Agent Dave Rice’s staff at UNLV; the two seasons in question are highlighted on the chart below.

NOT OMINOUS AT ALL, NO SIR!
In the near term, Brian Dutcher now has a vacancy to fill for his top assistant. It sounds like he’s getting ample outside interest already, though an extremely SDSU thing to do would be to hire a former Aztecs assistant/player by poaching Gregg Gottlieb (Oregon State) or Aerick Sanders (UNLV), or maybe elevating Tim Shelton into the role. That’s assuming Shelton doesn’t also pack his bags for the green V (so, are we really not doing phrasing anymore?).
KEEP YOUR WRINKLY BULLDOG PAWS OFF TES, YOU MONSTERS.
Dammit so much.
Hearty congrats to Justin Hutson, but dammit so much.
*It’s still pretty funny tbh
