Victory in the Pacific! Penny and the ‘Tecs blow past the ‘Bows

DRAG HIM

Well! That’s a relief. The San Diego State football Aztecs, reeling from two straight losses after starting the season 6 and 0, went to Honolulu and beat Hawai’i 28-7. Coupled with Fresno State’s surprising loss at home to UNLV, the win cracks open a can of hope for a return to the Mountain West championship game.

This tweet from the official SDSU Football account is a good representation of the game: Rashaad Penny running to daylight past a handful of disinterested fans and thousands of empty Aloha Stadium seats.

A solid, necessary win, one that will be most remembered for That Run.

Game Preview: Aztecs vs. Fresno State Bulldogs

Old Oil Can

What: Fresno State Bulldogs at San Diego State Aztecs
When: Saturday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m.
TV: CBS Sports Network
Line: Aztecs -7.5

THE OLD OIL CAN!

If there’s one thing we get up for around here at Kabeer Thirty, it’s the Old Oil Can. Fresno State and San Diego State have been playing this game since 1923, when the Aztecs loaded up the team Model T and headed up north with nothing but an oil can (new, at the time) and their dreams. Fresno State won that first meeting and were awarded San Diego State’s oil can (it was customary at the time to place oil can wagers. Think of them as early pogs.). None of the preceding is actually true (but hopefully a future 3rd-division soccer team in San Diego can name their club after something in this story). They bought it on eBay.

Hey Reb! Your new logo is trash

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas updated their “spirit mark” i.e. athletics logo. It’s bad! UNLV tweeted it out yesterday and were met with immediate dogpiling and cyberbullying.

hahahahha WHAT

I was wrong. Vegas is bad.

Remember last week when I wrote about how my annual trip to Las Vegas for the Mountain West Conference Tournament is the highlight of my year and the weeks leading up to it are filled with giddy anticipation of the delightful frivolity to come?

Well fuck that. That version of me is dead. I am now in post-Vegas recovery mode and I hate everything.

A rare garbage hoops season (very likely) comes to an end

02garfield-600

After the dumbfounding mediocrity of the regular season, the glory of the first two games of the Mountain West Tournament had us all dreaming of a storybook ending for our SDSU men’s basketball heroes.

There shall be no storybook ending for our SDSU men’s basketball heroes.

The Aztecs bowed out to Colorado State 71-63 in the semifinals on Friday night/very nearly Saturday morning in Las Vegas. The grim demise came after leading – often dominating – for most of the way; about as fitting an epitaph as you can write for this year’s squad, actually.

SDSU demolishes Boise State, advances to semis

uycj0d7
This game, basically.

A little less than two months ago, a buddy and I went to a bar in North Park to watch the Aztecs-Boise State hoops game. We were the only two people in the establishment who gave a shit, to be sure, and I got a big eye roll from the bartender when I asked her to change one of the nine TVs showing NFL Network highlights onto ESPNU or whatever jerkwater channel the game was on. Then SDSU proceeded to suffer probably their most brutal, listless, depressing loss in a season of stanky-ass losses.

As you can imagine, I spent that night feeling kind of crappy about my choice of hobbies and my priorities in general.

Right now I’m writing this blog post in the middle of the night (thanks, 8:30 start) one day removed from an international flight and with a long day at work and a 9:30 p.m. game time (fucking hell) looming tomorrow. And you know what? At the moment, I’m good with it.

A game like this can sustain you.

Aztecs play basketball in cool retro unis, beat Wyoming

oldsdsuroadjersey

Aztecs win! Aztecs win!! They beat the Wyoming Cowboys, 77-68. Thank Vishnu, Buddha and baby Jesus for that. Old alma mater’s humbling crash to mediocrity has been demoralizing, as evidenced by students and fans voting with their feet by not showing up to this one (’twas an 8:10 PM tip, not ideal for a Tuesday). After 80 consecutive home sellouts it’s now been two straight not-sellouts. The stands were half-empty, folks.

We won’t have the Poinsettia Bowl to kick around anymore

poinsettia-bowl

Bad news about San Diego’s most lower-tier, MWC-affiliated, toxic-to-pets bowl game.

Now, many Aztec fans (myself, included) have been known to poke fun at the annual mid-December showcase of Group of 5 mediocrity. Indeed, with the exception of 2010, a drought-breaking year in which a trip to literally any bowl game would have been greeted with the unbridled enthusiasm of a monarch’s coronation, the thought of the Poinsettia was always a drag for us. It was a consolation prize in which we’d play a meh opponent in our shitty home stadium and pay exorbitant bowl game prices to do so.
