Blind recap: Aztecs lose to bad Cal Berkeley 89-83

We regret to inform that none of your loyal scribes were able to watch this game then write about it — which is to say; we were unavailable, except for one of us at the game as a visiting civilian with no intention of sitting down at a computer afterwards. Which is for the best as it turns out! San Diego State lost to the University of California men’s basketball team 89-83 in Berkeley.

The loss to Pac-12 cellar-dwelling Cal drops SDSU into the college hoops wilderness. With a résumé of a 30-point loss to Iowa State, a home loss to little crosstown rival USD and this loss to a bad Cal team, the Aztecs are now 5-4 and have squandered virtually any chance of an at-large berth to the big dance. It’s Mountain West tourney champs or bust, y’all, and it’s hard to imagine this iteration putting together a miracle run like last season, even if No. 6 Nevada weren’t standing in the way.

Jalen McDaniels led the Aztecs with 20 points and Jeremy Hemsley had 19, including 5 of 6 on threes. Neither was enough to keep the Golden Bears from finishing the game on an 18-5 run over the last 3:53. Justice Sueing led Cal with 23 points.

Feel free to read the box score and weep, and here’s Mark Zeigler’s U-T gamer.

SDSU returns home to face Division II powerhouse Cal State Dominguez Hills this Wednesday in a game that is sure to be enthusiastically attended. The Aztecs then host BYU on December 22.

Game Recap: It’s, uh, not looking good

It’s pretty silly to freak out about any single loss. Especially if it comes in the second game of the year. Especially especially when that loss is in a true road game against a veteran Pac-12 team that beat you pretty handily last year.

But if you really must freak out now, well, be my guest. Because whatever the hell just happened to the Aztecs men’s basketball in Tempe — officially a 90-68 loss to Arizona State in a game it led by six at the half — was pretty damn appalling.

Perhaps its fitting that Sun Devils’ head coach Bobby Hurley looks like Vladimir Putin because the second half of this game was a veritable pee tape —  a vulgar display debasing everyone involved that will now serve as Kompromat before the NCAA selection committee.

Or the NIT selection committee, whatever.

Game Recap: Boise State blows out Aztecs, teaches us important lesson that big dreams are for suckers

I really want nothing more than to go to bed and sleep for about 17 hours, so I’ll do my best to keep this brief. The San Diego State football team carried a No. 19 ranking, Heisman hype and a Fiesta Bowl resume into Saturday night’s conference showdown with the objectively evil Boise State Broncos.

The Aztecs lost it all, quickly and convincingly.

Aztecs ensure great deals for secondary market ticket buyers, lose to New Mexico

One game into the the Mountain West slate, and the San Diego State men’s basketball season is already a fully engulfed tire fire. I’m not sure whether to weep or just be grateful I never got the chance to really invest myself in this lost cause.

Thanks, I guess?

I don’t know, maybe that’s a little too harsh. But in the wake of the Aztecs’ disheartening 68-62 loss at Viejas on Sunday to an extremely meh New Mexico squad, I don’t think it is.
