We regret to inform that none of your loyal scribes were able to watch this game then write about it — which is to say; we were unavailable, except for one of us at the game as a visiting civilian with no intention of sitting down at a computer afterwards. Which is for the best as it turns out! San Diego State lost to the University of California men’s basketball team 89-83 in Berkeley.
The loss to Pac-12 cellar-dwelling Cal drops SDSU into the college hoops wilderness. With a résumé of a 30-point loss to Iowa State, a home loss to little crosstown rival USD and this loss to a bad Cal team, the Aztecs are now 5-4 and have squandered virtually any chance of an at-large berth to the big dance. It’s Mountain West tourney champs or bust, y’all, and it’s hard to imagine this iteration putting together a miracle run like last season, even if No. 6 Nevada weren’t standing in the way.
Jalen McDaniels led the Aztecs with 20 points and Jeremy Hemsley had 19, including 5 of 6 on threes. Neither was enough to keep the Golden Bears from finishing the game on an 18-5 run over the last 3:53. Justice Sueing led Cal with 23 points.
It all came down to one final shot — an off-balance prayer that had the entire city of San Diego on the edge of its collective seat. The attempt was true, rattling home and sending the raucous crowd at Viejas Arena into hysterics.
Red Panda had done it.
Five bowls, flipped onto her head from atop a god damn unicycle.
We are on the the Final Four Five in our elimination tournament of best wins of the Rocky Long era. Countless dozens of votes (OK, four dozen) flooded in during the first round, giving us a higher turnout than most A.S. elections. We ended up with three blowouts and a tie! Check out the results here.
As a result of the deadlock, we will now have a three-way cage match between Scared Money Don’t Make No Money and the 2015 and 2016 MWC Championship Games.
In the other semifinal, you most now decide what’s cooler: beating Boise on The Blue or beating Cal at the Q?
What: California Golden Bears at San Diego State Aztecs When: Saturday, September 10 at 7:30 PM TV: CBS Sports Network Line: Aztecs -7
So we’re playing Cal again. Awesome. Is this a rivalry?
Not exactly, but the schools do have a history. After Saturday’s game the Aztecs will have played Cal in six of the past 13 years. The Goldie Bears own a 4-3 lead in the series with the home team winning every game. Cal waxed SDSU last year at Berkeley 35-7 behind future first overall pick Jared Goff’s 300-plus and 3 TDs. As Aztecs fans, I think we’re all feeling pretty confident about Saturday’s game against Cal (hyperventilates into paper bag). But how are our frenemies at the University of California at Berkeley feeling about this? For answers we turned to Nick Kranz and Berkelium97 from California Golden Blogs to get their take on the game, SDSU’s chances of Pac-12 membership (SPOILER: NOT GOOD) and who has better burritos.
In what is sure to be a huge relief for all those worried there would not be an Aztecs men’s basketball season, SDSU has released its schedule for 2016-17. There is much to digest. Let us chew on this together.
In case you haven’t heard, San Diego State has a rather large foot-ball game on Saturday against an opponent from a Power Five conference. Even worse, this opponent is also representing the flagship school of the University of California system. As such our State School “DO YOU THINK YOU’RE BETTER THAN ME???” rabbit ears are at full attention this week.
Let us now scour the internets for something to get mad about, shall we?
