Game Recap: Aztecs hammer UNLV by 38 points LOL

There are two ways to look at what transpired Saturday afternoon at Viejas Arena, where the San Diego State men’s basketball team crushed UNLV 94-56 in what felt like a November paycheck game against a Southland Conference team that starts a 6-foot-5 power forward wearing a headband and goggles.

On one hand, you’d be forgiven if you came away a little bitter.

Where the hell has this been? That aggressive defense, that commitment to doing something on offense besides jacking threes, that perfect use of the bench. If SDSU stated playing like that a couple of months ago we’d be talking about NCAA Tournament seeding rather than the thrilling quest to avoid the conference tournament play-in round.

On the other hand, LOLOLOLOL eat it UNLV.

The Aztecs just rained merciless destruction on one of our most hated rivals, delivering the biggest beating ever in this series. Keep in mind, that spans 69 games and includes several seasons in the ’90s when SDSU was seriously putrid. The Rebels are probably hitchhiking back to Vegas right now while Malik Pope joyrides their team bus through Pacific Beach. At least I hope so.

Yeah, I’m feeling like going with option No. 2 here. Today was awesome, so I say let’s sit back, relax and enjoy the following video of SDSU beating UNLV with a pillowcase full of doorknobs, metaphorically. Mostly metaphorically.

Aztecs’ 10th straight win over UNLV briefly distracts from amusing students vs. reporter food fight

world-war-z

OK, we’ll get to the Zeigs vs. The Show stuff in a minute, I promise. You came here (presumably) to read about basketball.

And the basketball game in question was actually really good!

The Aztecs played with outstanding cohesion and intensity as they manhandled UNLV 77-64 on Sunday at Viejas Arena. The Rebels, rebuilding under old friend Marvin Menzies, are pretty bad these days, but we can be thrilled with the streak implications of this victory:

Resurgent Kell, stifling defense make for another fun trip to our Las Vegas timeshare

MGM01040

Trey Kell had been showing  faint signs of becoming Trey Kell again. He shot 50 percent from the field in back-to-back blowouts of San Jose State and Utah State – a welcome sight after three absolutely brutal performances (6-for-30, brutal) to start conference play.

Still, the junior hadn’t looked like Trey Kell, Dangerous Scorer Man since before Christmas.

Until Tuesday night.

Kell went off for 24 points to lead that Aztecs to their first true road victory of the season – naturally another win over UNLV at the Thomas & Mack, 64-51. It’s nice to know that even in what has to this point been a down year, we can still walk into the Rebels’ house and help ourselves to the liquor cabinet and whatever’s in the fridge.
