I just got home from attending the San Diego State men’s basketball game, which the Aztecs won by 36 points against a putrid San Jose State team with three wins to its name. It’s super late thanks to the CBS Sports Network mandated 8 p.m. start, and I have to get up early tomorrow to fight through another rainy commute full of standing water and spun-out Acuras on the 8.
As such, I’m going to set my time limit on writing this recap at one hour.
OK. Start the countdown … now!

Happy New Year! On the second day of this Gregorian calendar year 2018, the San Diego State men’s basketball Aztecs beat the Colorado State Rams 77-68 in Fort Collins, Colorado, town of backward-ass bumpkins, elevation 4,982 feet.
I caught glimpses and overheard fleeting commentary of this one while making a salad, a cocktail, a phone call and sitting for dinner with a friend. 2018 is a Tomorrowland year in roboto font, everything is digitized and dystopic, the future careens unstoppable toward us all. Save yourselves! Become a vegan. Put all your money in cryptocurrencies. Build your bunker now. In the meantime, here’s some things about a basketball game:

What the San Diego State men’s basketball team desperately needed after the ugliness in Laramie earlier this week was a cakewalk. Well, on Saturday night at Viejas Arena, dessert was served.
Is that not a scoreboard?
Yes that is a scoreboard.
And is that not a 79?
Yes that is a 79?
And is that not a 59?
Yes that is a 59.
And is that not the winning team?
Yes that is the winning team.
And is this not a gimmicky way to fill space in a post about an SDSU win that really wasn’t all that interesting?
Yes that is a wait … hang on … what?

There have been some pretty great tandems in San Diego State men’s basketball history. Gwynn and Cage. Heath and Slaughter. Leonard and Castleberry.
Malik Pope and Devin Watson won’t play together long enough to be mentioned in that lofty company. And, as we learned Tuesday, there are plenty of reasons to doubt this season of The Pope and Watson Show will be ultimately memorable or even satisfying.
But you know what? These two are going to make things fun as hell at times.
Tonight was one of those times.

It’s pretty silly to freak out about any single loss. Especially if it comes in the second game of the year. Especially especially when that loss is in a true road game against a veteran Pac-12 team that beat you pretty handily last year.
But if you really must freak out now, well, be my guest. Because whatever the hell just happened to the Aztecs men’s basketball in Tempe — officially a 90-68 loss to Arizona State in a game it led by six at the half — was pretty damn appalling.
Perhaps its fitting that Sun Devils’ head coach Bobby Hurley looks like Vladimir Putin because the second half of this game was a veritable pee tape — a vulgar display debasing everyone involved that will now serve as Kompromat before the NCAA selection committee.
Or the NIT selection committee, whatever.

The San Diego State men’s basketball regular season — thus the official launch of the Brian Dutcher era — starts Friday! To get you sufficiently lit/hyped/demoralized/angry, the staff writers of Kabeer Thirty now offer our bold predictions on what the 2017-18 season has in store.
One caveat: Last year we proved to be pretty shitty prognosticators.
We’ll try to do better this time around. Hopefully the team does, too.
The San Diego State men’s basketball team kicked off the Brian Dutcher era on Thursday night with a 98-79 win over UC San Diego. Yes, yes, I know: “Kicked off” is a stupid and embarrassing expression to use when writing about hoops, but you know what? I’m not changing it.
IT’S THE PRESEASON FOR BLOGGERS TOO. I’m here to learn from my mistakes and get better, folks.
Tonight’s game wasn’t on TV (not even the TV they have on computers these days) and I didn’t attend the contest because LOL I’m not paying $15 parking for a stupid exhibition game. So I didn’t see it. Lemonverbena had other plans, as well, and VocalMinoritySDSU lives in the Yukon Territory or somesuch. Fortunately, Attempted Chem was on the scene at State to drink beer, eat greasy Mexican food that will definitely not give him the runs and provide this handy Tweetcap for the first non-super secret fake game of the Dutcher era!
