San Diego State football entered 2018 on the heels of one of the best stretches in program history, ripping off 32 wins in three seasons. The 2018 season just ended with probably the lowest ebb of the Rocky Long era — a rain-soaked 27-0 loss to Ohio University in the Frisco Bowl in which the suspension-depleted Aztecs didn’t look particularly interested to be there.
The San Diego State football Aztecs opened their 2018 season with a 31-10 loss to the 13th-ranked Stanford Cardinal. They’re called the Cardinal because their old nickname was Indians. That’s right, smarter-than-thou “West Coast Ivy” Stanford is actually no better and no less culturally exploitative than SDSU.
Fuckin’ Stanford.
Except that Stanford stopped appropriating the Indian nickname in 1972, right after winning their second straight Rose Bowl. Stanford has won eight Rose Bowls. They played in the first (and almost last) Rose Bowl in 1902.
So maybe Stanford is a little different than us.
On this night the main observable difference was how Big and Tall the Cardinal receivers were in relation to our State school defensive backs. Specifically one Jose Joaquin Arcega-Whiteside, who lit up the Aztecs for 226 yards and three touchdowns on six receptions.
The Mountain West Football Media Summit is underway in Las Vegas, but we’ll get to that in a moment. The most interesting SDSU football news of the day (OK, more like vague rumblings of the day) came out of San Diego.
One day after the SoccerCity folks unveiled the unfortunately-named #WaitForSD campaign — publicly pleading with MLS for an extension, as if their land deal is a book report on the Berlin Airlift — there was some SDSU-related movement on a couple of fronts.
SDSU’s football season is shaping up to be a slightly improved facsimile of 2015. We’ve made it through the “losing to South Alabama” phase of the season. We passed through the “beating MWC teams convincingly but not overwhelmingly” stage. And now, here we are in the “housing fools by 30-plus” portion of the schedule.
