In an expected administrative move, the San Diego City Council on Monday approved a lease extension for San Diego State football at the former Qualcomm Stadium through 2020. The extension removes uncertainty for the university’s athletic department and for the Alliance of American Football, the new pro football league planning to play home games at San Diego’s former NFL venue in Spring 2019.
From Chambers: Council approves First Amendment to Agreement for Use & Occupancy of SDCCU Stadium btw the City of SD and SDSU
The motion to extend SDSU’s lease passed 6-1, with Mission Valley council member Scott Sherman (R-SoccerCity) the lone dissenting vote with two council members absent. Aside from Sherm’s usual water-carrying there did not appear to be much pushback from SoccerCity.
San Diego State football doesn’t often use fan giveaways as a marketing tool. I have a replica Kirk Morrison jersey somewhere and think I got a hat once or twice. If anything, it’s usually some garbage like a poster, magnet or key fob.
So it comes as no surprise that this year’s promotional schedule continues the tradition. There’s not a single thing listed as a giveaway, just a bunch of military appreciation nights, teacher recognition awards and whatnot. We would like to think that with some creativity, passion and a bit more cash, Aztec football’s promotional events could actually be a draw.
Here’s the 2018 promo schedule as it is, and maybe how it could be.
There was something of a surreal feel to this afternoon’s San Diego State football game. Maybe it’s that we’re not used to seeing the Aztecs play in broad daylight in their home blacks. Maybe it was the stagnant midafternoon sizzle of this stupid late November heat wave. Maybe it was the smallish turnout for a Black Friday game with nothing really on the line.
It was probably all of those things, actually.
In sum, they created the college football version of a Thanksgiving food coma. Consider it a mildly uncomfortable, lethargic yet unmistakably pleasant end to what has been a delightful feast of a regular season.
SDSU, aided by a pretty bad New Mexico team, made sure of the pleasant outcome, as the Aztecs handled the Lobos 35-10 on the strength of another monster Rashaad Penny performance and a nearly flawless defensive performance.
Since I’m not some dipshit Doak Walker Award voter, let me begin by giving Penny his due.
What: Nevada Wolf Pack at San Diego State Aztecs When: Saturday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m. TV: CBS Sports Network Line: Aztecs -16.5
Same story as last week and every week going forward: WIN
Nevada comes to town with a 2-8 record and nothing much to play for outside of pride (and that sweet, sweet “free” education). San Diego State is still playing for a shot at the MWC championship game, which requires winning out and Fresno State losing to Wyoming and Boise State…all of which is realistic.
One of the best things about having Rocky Long coach of your favorite football team (besides, you know, the winning) is how meme-worthy he is. Rocky has a colorful, unconventional personality, as was on display in his incredible postgame comments about The Blackout.
My blog cohorts and me are gleeful purveyors of these dankest of dank memes. For example:
These are all very good, mostly because they seem to contain kernels of truth gleaned from Long’s public persona. But the best Rocky Long meme out there is one this humble blog cannot take credit for. It’s this:
