Game Recap: Football Aztecs outlast EMU Emus in overtime for third straight win

Be careful what MACtion you wish for.

In their third stress-inducing home victory in three weeks, the San Diego State football Aztecs came from behind to beat Eastern Michigan 23-20 in overtime. The EMU Eagles do not identify as emus, but much like the freakishly tall flightless bird, proved stubborn and hard to knock over nonetheless.

Despite running their record to 13-0-1 against the Mid-American Conference, it turns out the Aztecs don’t really want that MACtion.

Game Recap: Aztecs notch epic win over No. 23 Arizona State! So why do I feel like I was just beaten with a baseball bat?

When I think back on the biggest victories I’ve witnessed as a San Diego State football fan, a particular memory comes to mind for each. I’ll never forget the euphoric mass of humanity on the field at STADIUM last September following the Stanford upset. Nor will I forget the realization dawning on me, after that clutch Adam Muema first down run in 2012, that the Aztecs had actually just beaten Boise State on The Blue.

When I think of tonight’s 28-21 win over No. 23 Arizona State — a game that probably ranks just a bit behind those two in the pantheon of Rocky Long-era wins — the lasting memory will be me nearly barfing six slices of Woodstock’s pizza onto some poor souls in Plaza Level below.

I’m not out of the woods yet in that regard, either, so apologies if I end up losing my dinner in this post. That game was … something.

Christian Chapman expected to miss up to six weeks with sprained MCL

The news on Christian Chapman’s left knee isn’t good, exactly, but it’s not as bad as initially feared.

This projected timeline for Chapman’s recovery means that at the very least, it will be the Ryan Agnew show for games against Arizona State and Eastern Michigan. Chapman could possibly return after the bye to face Boise State on the Avatar turf, though that seems like a tough scenario to drop a rusty, hobbled QB into the middle of.

Honestly, the way Chapman writhed in agony after being hit low in the second quarter against Sacramento State, I was expecting a season-ending ligament tear. So the fact that he should be back for a division title run is a positive development.

Aztecs return to the Tombstone for the scrimmagiest of scrimmages

tombstone1
Bend the knee.

Two weeks from the opener and in the wake of the Great Chickenpox Panic of 2017, the San Diego State fanfest/scrimmage/infectious disease quarantine saw the Black Team beat the Red Team 27-6 on Saturday.

Wait. Or was it the Red Team that won?

And why wasn’t the Red Team wearing red?

I don’t know the answer to either of these questions, and I’m actually OK with embracing the mystery here so don’t bother telling me.
