Reactionary hot take: The time has come for a (somewhat) more balanced offense

San Diego State will always be a smashmouth, run-first team under Rocky Long and offensive coordinator Jeff Horton, and that’s great. In an age where pass-happy spread offenses and four-hour games are the rule, SDSU’s pro-style, ball control attack makes defenses adjust to an unfamiliar style and typically endure a thoroughly unpleasant 60 minutes. Against inferior competition, the Aztecs tend to grind opponents down to demoralized powder by the second half.

Yet I think Saturday might have exposed the limits of stubborn, tough guy football.

AZTECS ALUMNI REPORT: Terrible news for Neeks, Reed gets traded, Maal gets paid

Can you believe it? August just started and football is already crushing our damn souls. Yesterday, we got some news out of Baltimore Ravens camp about rookie Nico Siragusa and it was not good. It was quite awful, actually!

That is absolutely devastating for Siragusa, who signed a 4-year, $3 million deal in May. Of course, because the NFL is basically the devil, that money is not guaranteed. Fortunately, he did bank a $620,000 signing bonus, so not all is lost. But man. First training camp and this happens?

Christian Chapman’s demo got rave reviews. Is he more than a one-hit wonder?

Before riding off into the sunset in a blaze of illegal stemming glory, former Aztecs quarterback Ryan Lindley started 49 games between 2008-11. It was a remarkable run of consistency that we didn’t fully appreciate at the time.

I think we do now.
