Game Recap: Aztecs survive Sac State; Chapman not so much

Generally, watching your team face a Football Championship Subdivision squad offers only two possible outcomes: A meaningless, emotionless win or a humiliating loss that is a harbinger of pestilence, sadness and doom.

What went down on Saturday night felt like splitting the difference between the two.

Yes, the Aztecs notched their first win of the season, gutting out a 28-14 victory over solid FCS opponent Sacramento State. But the Aztecs needed a late rally to avoid the embarrassing upset. Even worse, they almost certainly have lost QB Christian Chapman for an extended period of time. The senior injured his knee while being hit low during the second quarter and did not return. An MRI is scheduled for Sunday.

Game Preview: Sacramento State at Aztecs

Who: Sacramento State Hornets at San Diego State Aztecs

 6 p.m. Saturday
Where: SDCCU Stadium
TV: There might be a feed in the press box I guess, or on those Circuit City clearance sale TV monitors bolted onto the Plaza Level overhang. Buy a ticket, basically.
Line: Nah

The Stakes
Unless shit goes sideways, this game is a welcome chance for a needed tune-up before Arizona State. SDSU will have a somewhat low-pressure environment to work on correcting the things that went wrong in the Stanford game, including such trivial details as pass protection, covering opposing football men or not hesitating your way into a 17-yard sack. I’m guessing the team is feeling cranky after the way the second half of Friday’s game went down, and I believe Rocky Long is a good enough coach to channel that constructively.
