According to recent rulings by universally respected institutions such as the Supreme Court of the United States and the NCAA, gambling is actually good. With that important stamp of approval secured I am here once again to provide you with some sweet, sweet action on the 2018 San Diego State football season.
Before you make your Over/Under picks on the this year’s Aztecs, let’s review your selections last year.
The Rashaad Penny of frenzied, pink Croc-wearing consumers.
There was something of a surreal feel to this afternoon’s San Diego State football game. Maybe it’s that we’re not used to seeing the Aztecs play in broad daylight in their home blacks. Maybe it was the stagnant midafternoon sizzle of this stupid late November heat wave. Maybe it was the smallish turnout for a Black Friday game with nothing really on the line.
It was probably all of those things, actually.
In sum, they created the college football version of a Thanksgiving food coma. Consider it a mildly uncomfortable, lethargic yet unmistakably pleasant end to what has been a delightful feast of a regular season.
SDSU, aided by a pretty bad New Mexico team, made sure of the pleasant outcome, as the Aztecs handled the Lobos 35-10 on the strength of another monster Rashaad Penny performance and a nearly flawless defensive performance.
Since I’m not some dipshit Doak Walker Award voter, let me begin by giving Penny his due.
The litness aftermath of Tariq Thompson’s pick six.
With the Chargers gone and Mission Valley up for grabs, it seems everybody is suddenly *keenly* interested in San Diego State’s football attendance. Trouble is, that number has always been kind of tough to pin down. The official count is a tickets-distributed figure, and that often doesn’t jibe with the butts in seats. THE HATERZ on the other hand have it on good authority that literally zero people have ever attended an Aztecs football game. We’re here to find the truth, people.
Game
September 30, 2017: SDSU vs. Northern Illinois University. The Eye Gouge Game. Read the recap.
The dawn of the STADIUM era of San Diego State football has been ushered in with a mundane, forgettable win. The Aztecs drubbed UC Davis 38-17 Saturday night, modestly rewarding the 46,132 fans who sweltered through a nasty, sticky, stagnant night on the promise of fireworks.
Today’s game temperature of 95 degrees is the 2nd-warmest home game in SDSU recorded history (97 degrees vs. N. Dakota on Sept. 15, 2012).
Given the larger context of the season it’s tempting to place outsized significance on this game, but I’m not going to. Even with the Chargers off fighting for Lawndale/Bellflower/City of Industry, San Diego was never going to become an Aztecs town overnight. And frankly, no victory over an FCS team is going to make any former Aztecs agnostics get “ONE CITY. ONE TEAM.” tattooed on their necks.
Still, SDSU put its best foot forward in a season that could start some people on the conversion process. It was a good win and we should be happy about that.
We should also be happy to be indoors, with the air conditioning running at full blast.
