It has been a trying couple of weeks around the SDSU basketball program with longtime coaches defecting to rivals, a former signee deciding he didn’t want to pump his own gas anymore and the team’s star player out testing the NBA waters.
What we need is some unambiguously good hoops news, dammit.
Ah. Yes, that will do.
Aguek Arop is a Class of 2018 forward from South Sudan by way of Nebraska. He’s 6-foot-6 and long and defensive minded, which has Aztecs written all over it. It also had Wichita State written all over it; the Shockers were also a finalist for Arop’s services, which makes this commitment something of a statement: It seems the SDSU brand, despite the mixed results of the past three seasons, still has some cachet.
Here’s a scouting report on Arop from that Wichita Eagle piece linked above:
“Aguek is a defensive player at his core,” Robinson said. “He’s got a 7-1 wingspan and he’s thick. He probably walks around at 220. He’s a great rim protector and very versatile defensively. He’s a guy who can guard every position on the court, 1 through 5. But what makes him special is that on top of being a defensive-minded player, he’s really good on offense as well.”
Ah. Yes, that will do.
Jalen McDaniels update
Meanwhile, Aztecs fans everywhere continued the delicate balancing act of wanting what’s best for Jalen McDaniels and wanting what’s best for the San Diego State men’s basketball squadron. This week, the star forward was not invited to the NBA Combine.
This probably bodes well for the 2018-19 Aztecs, though it’s a total drag for Jalen. On the other hand …
Guhhhh, why does this have to be so complicated??
Just do what’s right for you, Jalen. We’ll have your back, no matter what.
