Principal Dutcher to stay at SDSU through 2023, expresses optimism this year’s homecoming dance will be ‘best ever’

Charles Grodin High School principal and San Diego State head men’s basketball coach Brian Dutcher announced to his students today that he has agreed to a contract extension to lead the Aztecs through the 2022-23 season.

After the conclusion of the laser show portion of today’s annual “Taking Care Of Business” back to school assembly (named for the 1990 Charles Grodin/Jim Belushi film), Principal Dutcher took the stage and made the announcement.

Aztecs beat out Shockers for sought-after 2018 hoops recruit

It has been a trying couple of weeks around the SDSU basketball program with longtime coaches defecting to rivals, a former signee deciding he didn’t want to pump his own gas anymore and the team’s star player out testing the NBA waters.

What we need is some unambiguously good hoops news, dammit.

Cal grad transfer Kameron Rooks cures your big man-related panic attacks

At the start of the day Friday, the SDSU men’s basketball team’s projected starting five looked something like this:

G: Devin Watson
G: Trey Kell
F: Max Hoetzel
F: Malik Pope
F: Jeremy Hemsley in a trenchcoat, standing on Jordan Schakel’s shoulders

As such, the questions swirling around the 2017-18 season included such doozies as:

  • Can Jalen McDaniels gain 55 pounds in a summer?
  • Can Nolan Narain get bitten by a radioactive spider?
  • Is it bad that this team has no established big men?
  • No, really. Is that bad?

At the end of the day Friday, things seem … a little less dire. You have Kameron Rooks to thank for that.
